Sub-Genre Research

I have done some research into the sub-genre pop ballads and presented my research using the Web 2.0 tool Prezi. This will help me because I may not use this sub-genre for my magazine but if I do, I will have a better knowledge of what features to include in order to attract my target audience.

Competitor Research

I have looked into five of the most popular pop music magazines and researched their prices, publishing companies, first date of release and how often they are released. I have presented this research in a word cloud. This research will help me when designing my own cover and double page spread because I have looked into the most popular pop magazines and what makes them so popular; so I can replicate this and create the cover of a magazine that would appeal to my chosen target audience.

Genre Research

I have researched further into the meaning of 'genre' and I have chosen to create my magazine cover, contents page and double page spread in the genre of pop so I have also researched further into the genre of pop, what it means, where it came from and why it is so popular. I have presented my research using the Web 2.0 tool Prezi. This will help me when I come to create my own magazine because I have a better knowledge of what a pop magazine should include and why people like to read them which will help me to know what to include in my magazine and what will attract people to it and therefore encourage them to buy it.

Mass VS Niche Publications

I have used the Wed 2.0 tool Powtoon to explore the differences between Mass and Niche publications. This has helped me to understand that Mass publications are not necessarily better or more successful than Niche publications because although Mass publications have a more general target audience, Niche publications are directed specifically towards a group of people with a common interest. This means that although Mass publications might have a larger audience, Niche publications are directed towards a specific audience which means they are more likely to buy the magazine regularly.

Summary of What I Have Learnt So Far

I have used a new Web 2.0 tool that I found called Venngage to summarise all the tasks that I have done so far, what I have learnt from doing them and how they will help me when I come to create my own magazine cover, contents page and double page spread.

Music Iconography Mindmap

I have produced a Music Iconography Mindmap using the Web 2.0 tool SimpleMind. In producing this mindmap, I have learnt about the variety of different genres and what types of audiences they attract. I found it easier to find artists and magazines in the pop, rock and jazz genre than I did reggae or classical which suggests that these are the more popular genres. This will help me in choosing the genre for my magazine as I have thought about the genres that people like and what target audience my magazine would attract. For example, if I choose to make a pop music magazine I will probably attract a larger audience than if I were to make a classical music magazine.
